We began our patient-doctor relationship when I could barely cope with all the psychiatric symptoms I had developed -- I was ready to give up. Alexandre was the sixth psychiatrist I consulted after twenty years of treatments for refractory depression, generalized anxiety and fibromyalgia, all without success. To be honest I no longer believed I could improve. But then his approach was so different: he asked if I had already taken a genetic test for the MTHFR enzyme (to find out if I had enough Vit. B complex substrate for neurotransmitter metabolism), and the test revealed that I did not absorb folic acid (and without this, the production of neurotransmitters suffers a considerable drop). It was just the beginning of a completely new phase of life, this time with efficient treatment. A few months later, he made the diagnosis that changed my life: I was autistic, specifically Asperger's, and I had ADHD and high abilities. After the initial shock and revolt over everything I suffered for not having been diagnosed sooner, I felt great relief -- and with it the strong feeling of having been reborn. That was almost three years ago. Since then, we have found a common desire to share our interest in the consequences of trauma and abusive relationships on physical and mental health with as many people as possible. First, we created SOFCA (Survivors of Child Abuse), and now we will make our extensive trauma research available here at Figueira, our recently launched psychoeducation centre. This is the result of passionate scientific outreach work, intending to raise awareness of the responsibility of each of us in building a safer and more supportive world, where a significant improvement in collective mental health can be achieved.
